Caring for Handmade Baby Clothes | Ugly Bugs Babywear

Handmade baby clothes last longest with gentle washing, low heat and careful drying. Always check the care label first, because trims, buttons and embroidery can need extra care.

Why handmade pieces need a little extra care

Handmade garments often have details that factory pieces don’t, such as smocking, bows, embroidery, buttons or frills. These make each piece special, and they are also the parts that can be damaged by a rough wash.

How to wash handmade baby clothes

  1. Read the care label. Follow it above all other advice, including this page.
  2. Check for loose trims. Before washing, look at buttons, bows and stitching, and fix anything loose.
  3. Choose gentle washing. Hand wash in lukewarm water, or use a gentle machine cycle if the label allows it.
  4. Use a mesh laundry bag. This protects frills, ties and small pieces from snagging.
  5. Use a mild detergent. A small amount of gentle, fragrance-free detergent is best, followed by a good rinse.
  6. Wash similar colours together. Bright or dark pieces can bleed into pale ones, especially in the first washes.
  7. Don’t wring or twist. Press out the water gently with a clean towel instead.

How to dry and iron

Lay the garment flat or hang it in the shade, away from direct sun and heat, which can fade colours and tighten fabric. If it needs ironing, turn it inside out and use a low heat, keeping the iron away from embroidery and trims.

How to store handmade baby clothes

Make sure each piece is completely dry before it goes into a drawer or box. Fold garments loosely, with delicate pieces on top, and keep them somewhere cool and dry. Storing them well also helps them stay nice for the next child or for gifting.

Spot clean when you can

For small marks, dab gently with a damp cloth and a drop of mild detergent rather than washing the whole garment. Less washing means longer-lasting pieces.
