How to Wash Newborn Clothes for the First Time | Ugly Bugs

Yes, wash new newborn clothes before the first wear. A gentle wash with a mild, fragrance-free detergent and a full rinse removes dust and any finishing left on the fabric.

Why wash clothes before baby wears them?

New clothes have been handled, packed and stored before they reach you. A first wash takes off dust and finishing from the fabric, and it is a good chance to check that seams and fastenings are in good order before your baby wears the garment.

How to wash newborn clothes for the first time

  1. Check the care label. Follow the temperature and drying instructions for each garment.
  2. Remove tags and packaging. Cut loose threads and tags carefully with scissors.
  3. Sort sensibly. Wash newborn clothes together, separate from adult laundry, and keep light and dark colours apart.
  4. Pick a gentle detergent. A mild, fragrance-free detergent used in a small amount is usually the best choice for new baby clothes.
  5. Use a gentle cycle. Close zips and poppers first, and put small items like hats and booties into a mesh laundry bag.
  6. Rinse well. An extra rinse cycle helps make sure no detergent is left in the fabric.
  7. Dry gently. Line dry in the shade, or tumble dry on low if the label allows it.

What to leave out

Skip bleach and fabric softener, and avoid very hot washes. Heat can cause shrinking, and softener can coat fibres.

A note on sensitive skin

If your baby has sensitive skin, or you are unsure which detergent to use, ask your clinic nurse, doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Washing a whole newborn wardrobe

If you are getting ready for a new arrival, wash everything the baby will use in the first few weeks, including vests, sleepsuits, hats, booties and swaddling cloths. Sort the washed clothes by size so the newborn pieces are easy to reach at 3 a.m.
